(Mercury in) Pisces: A Season In Hell

“Just think of any negativity that comes at you as a raindrop falling into the ocean of your bliss.”

Maharishi Mahesh

There are two types of Pisces people: those who are prone to depression and those who are not. Similarly, here, in the Northern hemisphere, there are two ways of entering Pisces season: with despair or resignation. I suppose there are also those who go through life indifferent to the seasons, but these people are robots, so they don’t count.

This season I am choosing infinite bliss while eating handfuls of cold tofu for dinner because what is the point of cooking anyway? And if it all matters then doesn’t nothing matter? The ennui! The sadness! The despair! And since there are no depths to my drama I share with you a quote by the 19th century poet, Arthur Rimbaud

“A thousand Dreams within me softly burn.”

Rimbaud! Tragic goth soul! Who also proclaimed:

“I believe I am in Hell, therefore I am.”

See how messy this is? How full of tears is our ocean of bliss? Rimbaud was born a few years after the planet Neptune’s discovery in Pisces, a striking signature for both dreamers and lost-at-sea-captains.

And it is here we find ourselves: in a Pisces season haunted by the illusory romantic fog of Neptune and the make it BIGGER that is the Zodiac’s magnifying glass, Jupiter. It is from a ménage à trois with these bedfellows that Venus departs, trying hard to keep her wits about her until Mercury stumbles drunk into this sublime mess.

If you weren’t already shouting Rimbaud into the emptiness, I bet you are now:

“I understand, and not knowing how to express myself without pagan words, I’d rather remain silent”

Not gonna lie: communication is being tested right now, but the good news is Spring is almost here! The sun enters Aries on March 21st, commencing the season of go, go, GO! Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait another six days for our minds to dry out, when Mercury leaves Pisces on March 27th. Which is to say, between now and then, it’s an excellent time for writing poetry but not such a great time for thinking clearly.

With that, a bit of poetry for you. Specifically, haikus. It’s the simplest poetic form that I can think of, and, honestly, I’m still not sure I did it right. Read for your rising sign (if you must choose), your sun sign (if you insist), and all three for maximum enjoyment.

ARIES: DETERMINED UNDOING

The sky is darkest;

inside a windowless box

night encircles you.

TAURUS: COMMUNITY CROWDS

Muffled chirps

flutter rapidly—wet wings:

Dense social burdens.

GEMINI: NOWHERE TO HIDE

Narcissus storms in—

injurious self reflection,

revert to interior.

CANCER: ONTOLOGICAL BLUES

Ninety nine bottles—

bartender grants you one question:

Cups drunk on wishes.

LEO: TRAPDOOR TO HADES

Even lions die.

Frizzy ash perm in flames—cries

cautionary tale.

VIRGO: INTO THE MIRROR

Nails exacting slice

a porous lover not a finch.

One eats the other.

LIBRA: SEA OF BURDENS

Ensnared by these rings,

she removed his finger joints.

A good time to quit.

SCORPIO: THE INFERNO

The key splits the fruit.

(Look inside that mango hole.)

We fit together.

SAGITTARIUS: WEIGHT AT HOME

Lens shatters the view.

A place to shed our new sofa:

Bury me under

CAPRICORN: LOCATION UNKNOWN

Hums, terrorizing,

canceling, noise galaxy—

This strange malcontent

AQUARIUS: CURRENCY EXCHANGED

Iridescent dimes

brace for thin wind; hide the doors,

hammer the shade

PISCES: THE SEA RENEWS ITSELF

Sallow toothed tiger

paces infinity pool:

Relish the last drown
